Come join us to watch the 90s cult classic anime film "Ramayana - The Legend of Prince Rama" (Dir. Yuko Sago)! This Japanese interpretation of the millennia-old Indian epic is the ambitious attempt to tell the story of Rama and Sita - originally narrated in ca. 24,000 verses - in a mere 2 hours of animation. Controversial at the time of its production, collaborative between Japanese and Indian artists in its making, and charmingly accessible for a global audience. The remastered film is about to be released, only in Indian movie theaters, later this fall - come watch the original here first! With brief introductory remarks by Prof. Nisha Kommattam (Comparative Literature).
Snacks will be served! Please contact Gaby Choi (gchoi2@uchicago.edu) if you require any accommodations.
